Accessibility statement for ask about electronic travel authorisation (ETA)

This web page is run by Home Office. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We have also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

Some people may find parts of this service difficult to use because:

  • navigating using a keyboard, as the focus and focus order is not always clear
  • navigating by landmarks, as the webchat is not in its own landmark

You can see a full list of any issues we currently know about in the ‘non-accessible content’ section of this statement.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

We are aware of the following issues.

Landmarks

The webchat is not in its own landmark. This means the webchat cannot be navigated to using landmarks. This fails WCAG 1.3.1 - info and relationships.

Keyboard navigation

When selecting the Start now button the focus does not automatically move to the webchat. To move the focus from the Start now button to the webchat, press the tab key 6 times. This moves the focus through the footer links. This fails WCAG 2.1.1 - keyboard accessible.

When navigating the webchat using tab and shift+tab, the focus does not always follow a meaningful sequence. From send a message, press shift+tab to move the focus to the oldest message. Continuing to press shift+tab, moves the focus through the messages forwards in time. To respond to any questions the webchat asks, respond by entering the answer as a response and press return. This fails WCAG criterion 1.3.2 - meaningful sequence.

When navigating through the topics in the webchat using a keyboard, the focus does not move when pressing the tab key. This fails WCAG criterion 2.1.2 - no keyboard trap.

Focus

There is no clear focus indicator for the ‘Send a message’ field. This fails WCAG 2.4.7 - focus visible.

When magnified, the webchat window can hide the focus. This fails WCAG criterion 2.4.11 - focus not obscured.

Some non-interactive elements in the webchat are focusable. This fails WCAG criterion 2.1.1 - keyboard accessible.

We plan to fix these accessibility issues by December 2024.
